According to the pundits everything from your TV to your toaster will soon be connected to the Internet (why I’d want to control my toaster from my office currently eludes me). Cisco—who will benefit greatly from increased Internet traffic—predicts that there will be 25 billion devices connected to the Internet by 2015 and 50 billion by 2020. Hopefully there will still be some bandwidth left over for us humans—whose numbers are paltry by comparison—to continue to stream videos from YouTube and Netflix.
While Internet connectivity admittedly provides major advantages for industrial, medical, and consumer applications, there’s more than a whiff of marketing hype at play here. Or am I just being overly skeptical? Are you currently designing a standalone product that will be Internet enabled? Do you envision doing so in the fairly near future? Please respond to this post with as much or little information as you care to reveal (‘yes’ or ‘no’ works, too). I’m just looking for a reality check. Thanks.
