Ok, thanks. The person I talked to sounds like he's getting one through a local rep.
Still, the old inexpensive starterkit boards aren't available, and if these are supposed to replace those, the sooner they get out the better!
Here's the Digikey page for one of them. I did a search for renesas spb:

I wanted to point someone at these today, but I couldn't find a link that said how to *get* one, or the price (other than an obscure press release on a third party site). What's the plan? Are they available through reps, distributors, web? When will they show up on, for example, digikey.com?
Ah! I searched for "subatomic". Thanks!
Thank *you* DJ!
After years of being a SysAdmin/SysEng I'd forgotten how much
fun it is playing with stuff at the micro level.Okay, it's
challenging, I admit. However, at least a logic gate displays
logic, unlike some of the line-of-business folks I've worked
with.

Now to find manuals for the H8 SPB which, if markings on the board are accurate, is based on the H8 Tiny.
Fun stuff!

Addendum: Chip on board is marked, if my failing eyes are correct, H8/36077. Found a manual for the chip. Nothing for the SPB itself yet. One of my "issues" is that I don't have any Windows machines to load the provided software on.

I have a friend that'll let me sit in his office and run through the tutorials, when I get some time. Any events on the horizon that would put the tools in Linux?

You can just copy the schematic PDFs off the DVD-ROM.
However, the strengths of the SPB kits are the software/hardware integration. Without being able to run the interactive tutorials, you're really missing a LOT.
